Police indicated that violence erupted after two men started shooting at each other in the midst of festivalgoers celebrating the last hours of the event. didn’t characterize the incident as an attack on festivalgoers in general, but rather as an apparent shootout between two people. While the Bite of Seattle normally draws huge crowds, hundreds of thousands of people coming into town for the festival, the sound of gunfire caused people to scatter in every direction. The crowd began trampling over fences in their haste to get away from the shooter, who was firing in the air.
A witness, who was eating close to where a concert was taking place, described hearing a quick burst of six or seven shots, followed by panicked people rushing toward him and his friends.
The Victims
Seven were shot in total with 4 admitted to hospital while 3 were pronounced dead on arrival.

Two victims were confirmed dead at the scene, and the other died from injuries sustained after being transported to Harborview Medical Center.
In a separate incident, four other people were shot, one of who was a toddler: The victims were identified in the first incident as a young boy, a 23-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, all listed in stable condition, plus a 40-year-old woman suffering minor injuries who refused transport to hospital. A further victim, the 4th injured, was treated at UW Medical Center for a gunshot wound. The shooting of a very young child has made what was a tragic event even more heartbreaking.
Police and Emergency Response
Officers were present at the festival when the shooting started and managed to get to the scene in a matter of seconds. Police Chief in acting role, Tyrone Davis, said his officers “ran toward the sound of gunfire and tried to provide life-saving treatment to the victims.” even prior to arriving Seattle Fire Department paramedics.
One person – identified as a “juvenile” by police – was identified and arrested at the scene. A second suspect managed to escape police, but is also being searched for. Police have not dismissed the idea that others may have taken part in the attack. Police have assured the public that there is still no significant threat.
Federal ATF agents were on scene Sunday evening as the Seattle Police Department investigation was underway. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson stated that the SWAT team was also called in for assistance by police in Seattle. The Seattle Police Department Homicide and Gun Violence Reduction units are investigating with federal assistance.
Officials React
Seattle Police Acting Chief Davis called the shooting ‘a tragedy, and I am very sorry for what happened here today,’ saying that the festival had ‘been going on for years without problems’ and attributing to the officers on the scene ‘what I believe to be a lifesaving response.’ Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and other city officials shared those sentiments, commending the first responders and residents who helped victims while shots were still being fired.

In the wake of the shooting, the Seattle Center Monorail was closed and Harborview Medical Center was locked down at the heavily police frequented nearby area. The festival site was evacuated and investigators collected 2 guns.
